Will your text send as one message?

Type a promo or reminder text. See its encoding, its length the way the network counts it, and how many parts it splits into, since each part is billed.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to Runner.

How it works

  1. Type or paste your message, the opt-out line included.

  2. Read the encoding, the count and the number of parts.

  3. Trim it, or swap the character that forced Unicode, until it fits the parts you want to pay for.

Questions about the SMS Character Counter

How many characters fit in one SMS?

160 in the standard GSM-7 alphabet. Once a message is longer, each part carries 153, since the rest holds the information that joins the parts back together.

Why did one emoji cut my limit to 70?

Any character outside the GSM alphabet, an emoji, a curly quote or a Korean letter, switches the whole message to Unicode, where one part holds 70 characters and each joined part 67.

Why do some characters count as two?

The GSM alphabet keeps a few symbols, such as € [ ] { } ~ and |, in an extension table, and each takes two places in the message.
