Can everyone read your colours?

Pick a text colour and the background it sits on. See the contrast ratio, whether it passes the WCAG levels for normal and large text, and a sample to judge by eye.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to Runner.

Order by Thursday for Saturday pick-up.

Fresh tarts this weekend

  • AA, normal text (4.5 to 1): does not pass
  • AA, large text (3 to 1): passes
  • AAA, normal text (7 to 1): does not pass
  • AAA, large text (4.5 to 1): does not pass

How it works

  1. Pick the text colour and the background colour, or paste their hex codes.

  2. Read the ratio and the four checks.

  3. Darken the text or lighten the background until the checks you need pass.

Questions about the Color Contrast Checker

What contrast ratio do I need?

WCAG 2 level AA asks for 4.5 to 1 for normal text and 3 to 1 for large text. Level AAA asks for 7 to 1 and 4.5 to 1. AA is the level most accessibility laws and guidelines point to.

What counts as large text?

Text at least 18 point, about 24 pixels, or at least 14 point bold, about 18.7 pixels.

How is the ratio worked out?

From the relative luminance of each colour, the WCAG formula: the lighter colour's luminance plus 0.05, divided by the darker's plus 0.05. It runs from 1 to 1 for the same colour to 21 to 1 for black on white.
