Google cuts by width rather than count, so the lines are the usual guide, not a hard limit.

How it works

  1. Paste the page's address, its title tag and its meta description.

  2. Watch the preview and the two meters as you edit.

  3. Keep the words that matter at the front, where they survive a cut.

Questions about the Search Result Preview

How long should a title tag be?

Google cuts titles by width, not by a fixed count, so there is no exact limit. About 60 characters usually shows in full on a desktop result. Put the words a searcher types first, so a cut takes the least important part.

How long should a meta description be?

About 155 characters usually shows in full; longer ones are cut, and Google sometimes writes its own snippet from the page instead. Say what the page gives the reader, in the words they search for.

Why does Google show a different title than mine?

Google may rewrite a title that is very long, stuffed with keywords or a poor match for the page. A clear title that matches the page's main heading is the one most often kept.
