How it works

  1. Add up your fixed costs for the period: rent, wages, software, loan repayments.

  2. Type your average price and what one sale costs you.

  3. Read the sales and the takings you need to break even, and how much each extra sale adds.

Questions about the Break-Even Calculator

What is the break-even formula?

Break-even sales equal fixed costs divided by the profit on one sale, which is the price less the cost of that sale. With fixed costs of 6,000, a price of 12 and a cost of 4, that is 6,000 divided by 8: 750 sales.

What counts as a fixed cost?

Anything you pay for the period however much you sell: rent, salaried wages, insurance, subscriptions, repayments. Ingredients, stock and card fees rise with each sale, so they belong in the cost per sale instead.

What if I sell many different items?

Use your average sale: total takings divided by the number of sales for the price, and the average cost of goods per sale for the cost. Your sales report gives you both.
